Building a New Country

Junior School

Mrs Childs (Head of Year 6)

How would you run a country? Year 6 have been planning how. They have explored different governmental systems, found out how the UK parliament works and thought carefully about Human Rights and social justice. Each country group decided which Global Goals to focus on and considered how people could take individual action. They also considered the laws and taxes to help run the country.

Every country has a theme park where Year 6 had to consider building costs, running costs and daily takings, as well as advertising costs. They created spreadsheets, formulae and charts to display their data and to find out if they made a profit.

Throughout the project, Year 6 have had to draw on a host of skills learnt during their years in the Junior School. As a year group, they have shown flexibility and initiative, continuing to focus and collaborate whether they have been working remotely or in socially distant lessons.

Here are some reflections from the girls:

Emily: “This project has been awesome to come back to school with because it is fun, we work as a team in person (we haven’t done that in a while) and we have used a range of skills to create it.’

Rebecca: “This project has worked so well because even though we are 2m away, we still feel we can work just as well, sharing our ideas. I’ve enjoyed learning about taxes as we don’t realise what our parents pay.”

Ava: “The whole of this project has been creative. It has changed the way I think about myself and I realise how lucky I am. You don’t realise how hard it is to run a country.”

We hope you like the following Memoji of the year group!
