Mrs Schofield (Head of Year 4)

On Friday 1st October, Year 4 gathered in our Science room for an engaging lesson about the Digestive system with Miss Dawson (Biology Teacher) from the Senior School.

In their Unit of Inquiry, the girls have been researching food groups and what is required to maintain a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. They have investigated why fruits and vegetables are important for our bodies and the quantities we should eat to keep healthy.

Miss Dawson came with a life size model of the digestive system which caused a great deal of excitement, and she showed the girls what happens to their food from the moment it enters your mouth until finally leaving the body. Using a food blender, Miss Dawson demonstrated how the teeth and then the stomach mashes your food and sends it to the small intestines, modelling this with a pair of tights to squeeze the food slowly through, creating a gooey mess. This proved to be quite fascinating to most of the girls and a little off-putting for others!

It was super to hear so many questions, and hear how the girls were connecting what they had seen with their previous learning. A big thank you to Miss Dawson!
