By Mrs Inkson (Head of Year 6)

On Thursday morning, Year 6 welcomed Sam Price, the CEO of Beyond Detention, a charity that supports asylum seekers held at Yarl’s Wood Detention Centre. The talk offered a thoughtful perspective on human migration and the challenges faced by those seeking asylum, linking closely to the current Unit of Inquiry.

Sam shared the vital work Beyond Detention does to support detainees, offering friendship, emotional and practical support, advice, education workshops and board game sessions to bring comfort and connection. The girls gained a deeper understanding of the isolation and uncertainty asylum seekers face and the role kindness and community play in difficult times.

The session prompted thoughtful discussions, with the girls asking insightful questions about the asylum process, the impact of detention, and ways to contribute to positive change. They reflected on the importance of treating all individuals with dignity and compassion, regardless of their circumstances.

We are grateful to Beyond Detention for sharing their time and expertise, and we look forward to further exploring these important issues in our learning.
