The Awe and Wonder of Liquid Density

Mrs Woolley (Biology Teacher)

This week the Junior School Science Club investigated liquids of different density – namely oil and water.

First, the girls observed how the oil floats on top of the water as the water has a higher density. They then then added some food colouring to the oil and water into test tubes. To make them into mini lava lamps a Vitamin C tablet was added; then the science in action began!

As the Vitamin C tablet dissolves it releases carbon dioxide, which has very low density; these carbon dioxide bubbles stick to the water making them lighter than oil and carrying them to the top. As the bubbles pop and the water becomes heavier again, it drops to the bottom.

The girls were mesmerised by the rising and falling of the coloured liquid and could clearly understand the science behind their observations.
