Ms Rogers (LRC Manager)

On Friday 3rd June, the Junior School was delighted to welcome children’s author and illustrator, Olaf Falafel. Olaf is a surrealist comedian whose debut stand up show Olaf Falafel and The Cheese of Truth won critical acclaim and award nominations.

Olaf’s third book, It’s… One Giant Leek for Mankind is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. It combines, in Olaf’s own words, “Just the right amount of silliness and facts”. His visit formed part of his own mission to visit 50 schools, BGS being number 40.

Girls gathered as part of a whole school assembly to listen to Olaf speak about the writing process, the moon landing and his own varied career. The girls were treated to footage from the actual moon landing and a master class on how to draw.

Our Year 6 girls summed up the event perfectly below:

“We would just like to say thank you very much for organising Olaf Falafel’s visit to our school. We found it very interesting to see and hear from a real life author and illustrator and see how he balanced this with being a dad and comedian too. He didn’t come across as our idea of an ordinary author. We really liked that he included us in the session, teaching us how to do some of the drawing from his books and learning other facts too.

“If we had to describe the session in three words we would say: funny, interesting, and wonderful.”
