This week the Learning Resources Centre (LRC) have organised various activities in celebration of European Day of Languages (EDL).

EDL is celebrated across Europe on the 26th September every year. It aims to promote the rich linguistic diversity of Europe and raise awareness of the importance of lifelong language learning for everyone!  Set up by the Council of Europe in 2001 and still being promoted throughout the world today.

The girls at the Junior School have been talking about what other languages they speak at home with their families and friends. They have also been raising awareness of the wide variety of languages spoken every day and of course to promote cultural and linguistic diversity within the community and their classrooms.

There are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in the world today. However, about 2,000 of those languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers. The average person speaks at least 7,000 words a day, with many speaking much more than that.
