By Mrs Schofield (Head of Year 4)
During October the Junior School Diversity & Inclusion Action Group were very busy informing their classes about Black History Month, and how as a community we could highlight important figures both past and present.
The class representatives introduced the idea of decorating our classroom doors, either in the style of an influential black artist, or choosing an inspirational public figure to celebrate and raise awareness about. It has been wonderful to see all the different designs and collaborative work on display. Some were inspired by artist Alma Woodsey Thomas an African-American teacher renowned for using vivid colours and patterns, to Florence Griffiths Joyner, a flamboyant athlete who still holds the Women’s 100m World Record set in 1988! She is celebrated for inspiring the young to reach for the impossible.
Tess Hawkes in 4C said she enjoyed this activity as she had never heard of her class’ chosen person, Althea Gibson, and now she knows what an amazing tennis player she was!
